مَنۡ ذَا الَّذِیۡ یُقۡرِضُ اللّٰہَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنًا فَیُضٰعِفَہٗ لَہٗۤ اَضۡعَافًا کَثِیۡرَۃً ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ یَقۡبِضُ وَ یَبۡصُۜطُ ۪ وَ اِلَیۡہِ تُرۡجَعُوۡنَ (۲۴۵)
Who is the one who could lend to ALLAH a good loan and then He would multiply it many times over? And ALLAH will withhold and repay it. (245)
کون ہے جو خدا کو قرض حسنہ دے پھر وہ اسے کئی گنا بڑھا دے اور خدا اسے روکے گا اور ادا کرےگا
Discover the Qur’an’s profound encouragement for giving in the way of Allah through the concept of lending Him an acceptable loan. As revealed in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:245), those who provide Allah with an acceptable loan receive manifold increases in return.
The act of charity in the light of Quran is likened to lending money to the Almighty, emphasizing its significance. Allah, the owner of all wealth, assures that those who spend in His way will be rewarded abundantly, as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261). This reward is not merely a small return; it can multiply, reaching up to a factor of 700 or even more.
In a compelling narration, Sayyidunā Abdullah b. Mas’ud shares an incident where a Companion, Abu Dahdah al-Ansari, gave his garden to the cause of Allah as a loan. This act reflects the unique method through which spending in Allah’s way is promoted.
The Qur’an sheds light on various aspects of charitable giving, outlining the qualities of contributors and emphasizing the rewards for those who give in private and public. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:274) assures that such individuals will be free from fear and sorrow.
This prize is also not little; as the 261st verse of Surah al-Baqarah makes clear, it is multiplied numerous times over, even up to a factor of 700 or thousands.
Charitable giving enhances one’s wealth and rewards in the hereafter.
Sayyidunā ʿAbdullah b. Masʿūd رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ explained:
When the verse مَنْ ذَا الَّذِیْ یُقْرِضُ اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا was revealed, Sayyidunā Abū Daḥdāḥ al-Anṣārī asked, “O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, does Allah Almighty want us to give a loan?”
“Yes, O Abū Daḥdāḥ”, replied Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم
Charity in the light of Quran: A true Narration
When the verse مَنْ ذَا الَّذِیْ یُقْرِضُ اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا was revealed, Sayyidunā Abū Daḥdāḥ al-Anṣārī asked, “O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, does Allah Almighty want us to give a loan?”
“Yes, O Abū Daḥdāḥ”, replied Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.
Sayyidunā Abū Daḥdāḥ al-Anṣārī رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ subsequently called for the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلّهٖ وَسَلَّم وَسَلَّم. He declared, “I give my garden in the way of my Lord as a loan.”
In his garden, Sayyidunā ʿAbdullah b. Masʿūd رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ said, “There were 600 date palm trees.” There, he lived with his wife and kids. Approaching his house, Sayyidunā Abū Daḥdāḥ al-Anṣārī رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ called on his spouse, Sayyidatunā Umm Daḥdāḥ. “Let us leave here,” he remarked in response to her response. In the way of my Lord, I have lent you this garden.
Motivational stories within the Qur’an inspire believers to emulate the selflessness of the Ansari Companions who prioritized the needs of others over their own. Surah Al-Hashr (59:9) narrates the remarkable incident where the Ansar sacrificed for the Muhajirin, displaying unparalleled generosity.
Determining contributors and their qualities:
Allah explains the attitudes, behaviors, customs, and benefits of charitable giving.
اَلَّذِیۡنَ یُنۡفِقُوۡنَ اَمۡوَالَہُمۡ بِالَّیۡلِ وَ النَّہَارِ سِرًّا وَّ عَلَانِیَۃً فَلَہُمۡ اَجۡرُہُمۡ عِنۡدَ رَبِّہِمۡ ۚ وَ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡہِمۡ وَ لَا ہُمۡ یَحۡزَنُوۡنَ (۲۷۴)ؔ
“There is a reward given by the Lord for those who gift their wealth by day or by night, in private as well as public—and they shall not have fear or sorrow.
That is to say, a lot of humans devote their days and nights to the service of the Almighty. Similarly, depending on the circumstances, they may give in private at times or openly at others. It’s a beautiful sentiment. Many individuals have a deep devotion to giving in the name of their faith, and it’s heartening to see that they give generously both in public and in private. The rewards promised to them by their beliefs are a testament to the power of generosity and selflessness.
