Introduction:Conversation among children
This course guides teachers to construct their understanding of the benefits of increasing student talk time through various activities, before moving on to examining the teacher’s role in facilitating this talk.
Finally,it highlights the connection between speaking and literacy development and the importance of supporting children’s language skills through assessment and appropriate use of their language.
By the end of this course, a teacher will learn how to:
1. Increase Student Talk Time by organizing activities where children are encouraged to talk in groups (Informal talk, Exploratory talk).
2. Provide opportunities for children to indulge in Descriptive talk.
3. Critically examine the teacher-directed talk in the classroom (balance with student talk).
4. Analyze the assumptions behind not letting children talk.
5. Understand the theoretical underpinnings of the relationship between
speaking with reading and writing.
6. Deliberate on the usage of the child’s language (respect and build upon it).
7. Assess formal talk on a variety of parameters (clarity, participation etc.).
